Luxembourg – Portugal
Luxembourg hosts the European champion Portugal in a game from the last round of the European qualifiers. This fixture is going to be played at the Stade Josy Barthel on Sunday. Let’s take a look at it in our soccer matches tomorrow.
Luxembourg are fourth in Group B and they will finish fourth, no matter what will happen in the last round. So far they have a record of one win, one draw and five losses, which was totally expected in this tough group they found themselves in. Their only win in the group so far came against Lithuania.
Few days ago Luxembourg played a good game in Belgrade, but suffered a 2-3 defeat against Serbia. Gerson Rodrigues and David Turpel scored for the visitors, but at the end Serbia scored one more. Still, it was a good game for Luc Holtz’ team and his boys.
The current European champion Portugal can’t win this group anymore, because Ukraine already won it. What Selecao can do now is win their last game and keep the second place in front of Serbia. Their advantage in front of the Balkan side is just one point.
On Thursday Portugal brought some joy to their fans at the Estadio Do Algarve, beating the outsider Lithuania with 6-0. The captain and all time goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hattrick, while Pizzi, Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Paciencia also scored.
When Portugal and Luxembourg met in Lisboa last month, Selecao didn’t face any trouble and won the game with 3-0. Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Guedes put the ball in the net.
In our soccer matches tomorrow we don’t doubt that Portugal are the big favourites to take the win here. They’d like to stay ahead of Serbia in the standings, so Fernando Santos’ boys will do what’s needed to take all of the three points. Luxembourg on the other hand will start thinking about the next qualifying campaign.
